This design is inspired by Plato’s Timaeus in which he presents an elaborate account of the formation of the universe and an explanation of its impressive order and beauty. I tried to capture his descriptions and portray the way he describes this origin of our universe through art. The metaphysical and epistemological principles shown here are highly influencial in my understanding of what it means to exist. The Being and Becoming paradox of humanity is fascinating to recognize in the sense of our own mortality. In the Timaeus he shows us several basic elements and shapes (icosahedron, dodecahedron, etc) that are the foundation of our universe. Plato’s analysis of perfect sequences and the perfect sound bringing us to necessity is pictured in this piece. The rotations of the world soul in the form of a human is also depicted. The flow of Heaven and Interlocking Nature’s creating newness as well as the revolutions of the mind are similarly shown. In addition to being inspired by the Timaeus, this piece is also heavily influenced by ancient astronomy. As Plato himself said, “Astronomy compels the soul to look upward and leads us from this world to another.” For the essence of OUR worlds rotation about the multiple axis is clear in the significance of shape in the universe. The obliquity of the Ecliptic is pictured as well as the Azimuth and Altitude lines. In this design can be seen both the parallel spheres, Oikumene, horizontal parallax, armillary spheres, and the celestial sphere with the celestial equator, ecliptic, and tropics.
